Married and Loving It!!! feat Uzo and Andrew Iwobi

It's the third edition of Married and Loving It!!!! If it's your first time here, welcome! You can read a background to the series HERE.

Today I present to you a very wonderful couple.. When this series started, they were the first couple that came to mind. It was easy to think about them because they have one of the best marriages that I know and admire. They are one of my marriage mentors and I have learnt un-quantifiable things/attributes from them.. Not just words that have been spoken, but by observation as well.

Their marriage is a huge influence on my outlook on marriage and my desire for the kind of man to marry as I illustrated HERE.. Good men (and women) and marriages are not myths but are very real.... You can desire and have one too by God's grace.

This in itself is the inspiration for Married and Loving It - To show that an excellent marriage is obtainable by God's grace, love, understanding and other things that the couples we feature here fortnightly share with us.

I am incredibly blessed to know this beautiful couple and to call them my second parents. I could try to aptly introduce them but I believe I won't do them justice. However, it is my delight to have as our first guest for the year on Married and Loving It - Dr and Mrs Andrew and Uzo Iwobi... If you love 'Love stories', then please grab a drink and some food, sit tight and enjoy this very beautiful interview!

***********************************************

Welcome to Married and Loving It! It's a real pleasure having you speak to us today.. To be honest :-) I have personally looked forward to it :-) Could you kindly introduce yourselves?

Andrew and I have been married since the 28th of October 1991 and we actually got married at the marriage registry in Lagos Nigeria. After qualifying as a Barrister & Solicitor I enrolled in the Nigerian Bar, thereafter, I joined Andrew in the UK.

Great! How did you meet?

Andrew and I met at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus Law School lecture hall in 1989. Andrew was a dashing young and extremely handsome man with a bright future ahead of him. Andrew comes from a mixed heritage background – his mum Letty is from a white English / Jewish heritage and his dad Charles is a black Nigerian man. He was highly sought after by many young ladies in our university and by other young women within his circle of friends not just for his dashing good looks and charming personality, but he had an outstanding academic background.

Andrew had achieved a First Class Hons Degree in Law from the University of Jos and qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor at the Law School in Victoria Island Lagos -graduating with the best overall result in the Nigerian Law School in his year 1981. He was awarded the Teslim Elias Prize for “The Best Overall Performance” at the Nigerian Law School and was also awarded a second prize which was the Nabo Graham-Douglas Prize for Commercial Law at the Nigerian Law in the same year. At 25yrs he produced a well acclaimed thesis on, “Legal Pluralism in the Land Law of Southern Nigeria” and achieved a PHD in Law from Birmingham University UK in 1987. Andrew was a brilliant, intelligent and well-read young man and was serving at the time as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law at Enugu Campus. He was lecturing within the Law school at the time and taught my classmates and I the much dreaded “Equity Law”. He was noted as UNEC’s most eligible bachelor and many of the ladies in our class gawked at Andrew, wanting to date him, marry him – whatever… well so did I. He was 28yrs old and I was 20yrs old.

Dr Andrew Ubaka Iwobi / My Beau xx
His achievements are very impressive! I'm sure we all can almost imagine how many ladies would be giving him the 'eye' lol.. How was it for you?

I was a rather plain and ordinary young lady – who always had a passion for justice and equity (no pun intended)! I had a spring in my step and worked hard to do well in my studies and graduate as a Law graduate. I recall that early in my third year of Law studies in UNEC, we had to study some core law subjects, one of which was “Equity Law” taught by our then Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law called Dr Andrew Ubaka Iwobi. At this point, I had never seen this lecturer in passing so had no idea who he was. When my friend Tessy Ohahuru and I walked into our very first Equity Law Lecture (a little late) Dr Iwobi looked up (his irritation palpable at the disruption to his lectures by the “two late stragglers” – as he called us both; all I could do was return his gaze, but mine was in pure unadulterated puppy love!) and I turned and whispered to Tessy – “There is the man that I will marry”! Dr Iwobi then sternly reprimanded us for turning up late and asked us to sit down quickly and then stated that next time that happened, we had to stand outside as we would not be allowed in. He said, “No stragglers will be allowed into my lecture”. Thus severely reprimanded and absolutely embarrassed, we sat down quickly and throughout that Equity lesson, prayed earnestly that he would forget our first meeting. It was not a favourable introduction and so I sat down quickly beside Tessy who promptly settled down and started taking notes as the lecture progressed.

I can honestly say that I heard nothing, saw nothing, and understood nothing - apart from staring in awe at the face of the gorgeous Dr Iwobi! I was so lost in wonder that Tessy nudged me a few times and said, “Uzo! stop this at once and face your book ooo, with all the people interested in him – such a man will definitely have a lady in his life”. I totally ignored Tessy and stared at him for the entire lesson – I do not recall writing anything down during that first lesson.

As you may guess, I got only a C for Equity Law following the assessment that year (but later when we got engaged) I asked him why he had given me such a low score when I did so well at the other law subjects, he said (with an amused grin), “I didn’t give you a C, you deserved a C – you probably hardly listened during my lectures – you were too busy admiring the lecturer”! I have not let him forget that he marked my paper extremely harshly!

That was how we met!

Hahaha... I lovee your story so much! I could read it again and again!

The rest of my study life revolved around using all of my genteel womanly wiles to draw his eye, so I started wearing a little dash of make up with talc white powder to stop me sweating in the heat. A little lipstick here, eye pencil there etc… but very subtle and understated (loud makeup with foundation was never my thing). As an ardent Pentecostal (though from a very Catholic background originally) I prayed earnestly that if it pleased God He would cause “Dr Iwobi” to notice me and spark the same interest in me that I had in him. I also asked my eldest sister (a medical doctor) who was newly married and had just returned from the UK on honeymoon to lend me some of her “posh” UK made dresses – just to be worn during “Dr Iwobi’s lessons” and I looked really sophisticated too – dress to impress was my motto! Also I often went to borrow his law textbooks after lectures (most of which I never actually read) and when returning them I’d slip in a tract or two telling him to accept Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Every opportunity I got I preached to him and he was always very polite telling me that he was already a Catholic and a Christian and he encouraged me to return to my Catholic roots.

Thank you for those tips.. Pulling a 'Ruth' :-D

I was the Vice President of the Christian Law Student’s Association (CLSA) and so I invited him (in his capacity as our Associate Dean of law Faculty) to our Law dinner which involved approximately 200 attendees. My younger sister was a medical student then in the University and a brilliant cook – so my sister and I and two other students cooked the three course dinner for the CLSA and surprise surprise “Dr Iwobi” and his younger sister turned up (I suspect to hear a newly converted Christian Judge address the students) and I was skipping with joy. They had a personal welcome from a beaming and exuberant me as I led them to sit at their table! (when we got engaged he admitted that he had attended the dinner because he was beginning to notice that I liked him and he thought he would take the opportunity to see more of me) but he brought his sister as a cover. I had assumed she was his girlfriend until he introduced her at the end as his sister :-)! I could have hugged her!

At the end of the dinner – as he was leaving with his sister, he called out to me and thanked me for the invitation and complimented the chefs saying he had never tasted such delicious jollof rice and fresh fish pepper soup in a mass catered event and asked for the chef’s details and I told him I made the food!

That was it… a few months later he asked me to date him – it was actually happening finally – but I have to say, that though I absolutely loved every bit of Dr Iwobi, I was raised by very strict parents and had really strong moral values… we both came from very respectable families and neither of us wanted to let our families down or dishonour each other. I was determined never to ask to date him, that was his job, it would not be appropriate in my mind (this is not to take anything away from courageous sisters who actually ask their spouses to date, it just wasn't something I felt I could do) and so after he asked to date me, I accepted but straightaway told him that I would never have pre-marital sex as I could not compromise on my standards; being the gentleman he is, he wholeheartedly supported my decision and never pressured me in anyway during our two year courtship – though it was very hard to resist.

I actually believe that standing on my Christian values made him admire me more because I stood on my moral principles and never compromised. He actually said (after we were married that he knew I was “wife material” thereafter)! Sometime after that, he proposed with a song by John Denver called, “Annie’s Song” which remains my favourite to this day.

Our Courtship Period :-)
Awww, that's so beautiful! What was your wedding day like? Please tell us 3 memorable experiences from the day?

1st - After our registry marriage at the Lagos State Registry, we had a church wedding in the UK on the 12th of April 1993 and as we were starting out, we had very little money – so everything was homemade (apart from my wedding gown) - flowers, cake, decorations etc. Our families were very supportive. All that mattered to us was not spending money we didn't have, but having enough to live on after the wedding.

2nd - Walking into the church with a white veil covering my face and looking through the delicate organza/lace material at a gallant, handsome young man gazing at me with so much love that I cried walking down the aisle. Our fairy tale ended with a happily ever after.

3rd - Lifting my left hand to receive the ring and placing a ring on his finger also, then the bit where the priest said you may kiss your bride… hmmmmmm lush!

Our engagement photograph
Hahaha... That's wonderful! Now, some people say that the first few years of marriage comes with challenges, how were your first 3 years of marriage?

Exciting, blissful, new, exhilarating, fulfilling, complete and in love! In the midst of all that – learning the habits of another human being who you actually get to know more intimately after marriage, habits, likes and dislikes, best meals, worst meals. It was not always easy and in having disagreements we were keen never to sleep angry or cross with each other – so on some nights we would stay up very late trying to resolve an argument. We prayed a lot together and shared scriptures often; then my daughter was born after a year of marriage and the year after that our son was born also. That meant that we had two children under two… it was very stressful but my mum came for “Omugwo” and helped us so much. So kids combined with law lecturing for my husband and studies and working for me… was pretty tough going, but God sustained us and helped us a lot!

Thank God for His grace.. And thank you for being so open, honest and refreshing in your responses. I've laughed many times in the course of it :-) :-)

************************

Now, we come to the part in Married and Loving It where we ask our guest-couple to list according to the number of years they have been married, Things Marriage has Taught Them.. Here goes..

23 THINGS MARRIAGE HAS TAUGHT US - Dr and Mrs Iwobi

(We've split our responses so you can hear from both sides…)

Andrew’s Answers Uzo’s Answers
Marriage is best approached as a partnership where each partner strives to outdo the other in love. Pray for and with your man
Be patient when learning what pleases your wife Cherish your man
Be prepared that women will change their minds a few times on the same issue Praise him and speak positively of him
Love and cherish your wife above your life, apply yourself to achieving her joy and well-being in all you do Take time to invest in romance even 20yrs on
Maintain an appropriate distance from other women Write love notes to each other
I learnt that my wife placed more value on little thoughtful gestures rather than expensive gifts Stay faithful and never get distracted
I learnt early on in the relationship that my wife is the best cook in the world Honesty is critical
It is really important to spend time in prayer as a familyMarriage is hard work and being united – especially with children involved helps a lots cause they sometimes play parents against each other.
Show love to all your children equally and demonstrably because it prepares them to give love to others around them Have kids early if you can afford them cos when they grow up you’ll still have the energy to roll and tumble with them.
Try and make out time to spend some quality alone time with your wife away from the bustle of family life and children's activities Remember that to err is human and no one least of all yourself is perfect.
Really important to instil strong Nigerian values in the kids e.g. respect for elders etc...from a very young age Forgive quickly and stop recounting old hurts

When times are tough remember how you began and what you saw in your man that drew you to him in the first place! I realise that making him sad always remains the farthest thing from my heart.
*****************************************

I wouldn't add much more to this very lovely interview infused with a lot of humour. One thing that their story has taught me is that God is the Author of the best love stories.. Don't think that romance is dead.. Not at all! God can give you the most intriguing, book-worthy love story too!

What's more, a story that wouldn't end a few years after marriage but would get more interesting 23 years on and many more afterwards.

This is my prayer for you today, that God will bless you with an excellent home and marriage that you would love and enjoy being in, that He would bring that man or woman to you according to your desire and His will.

I would also like to pray for those who are already married, that God will make you flourish in your home and that you will experience true love and joy in your home that would grow as your marriage grows in Jesus name.

God is love and where He is, love dwells there.

Conversations with One - LDRs: Worth the Stress or Not??

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a brand new edition of Conversations with One!! The first for the year 2015! (Yeah, it's a week of firsts!)

A little introduction for first-timers:

Conversations with One is a chat-series on the blog.

Each week, the 1 + TheOne panel (made up of beloved and very wise friends with a variety of personalities) and I bring you snippets of our 'round-table' discussions from a male/female perspective.. We talk about any and every thing!!

Ladies! Have you ever wanted to get into the mind of a guy? (I know I do! lol), and for guys, I bet once in a while you wish you could just read her mind! Well hopefully week after week, we get to bridge that gap!

You can have a look at the last conversation where we discussed money issues in relationships. You can read it and other previous episodes HERE.

This week's topic goes thus:

"I met this guy over the holiday and there seems to be a lot of potential. However the only but is that he will be going back to the States and I don't know if a Long Distance Relationship (LDR) is worth a go. I really got to know him over Christmas and his values and mine are very similar and we just... click! What should I do? Please help!!"

Right, people of God, as you may be able to tell, topic for this week is:

Long Distance Relationships aka LDR - To be or not to be?

If to be, what are practical ways to sustain the relationship? If not to be, what are challenges that could pose a barrier to LDRs surviving?

**************************************************
Miss True Talk: Ha! This topic, I have an answer to - 'to be' o.

My relationship that led to marriage can be termed 'LDR' of sorts: Kano-Lagos relationship. So, I believe it can work out, it's the individuals that matter. Back then, mobile phones were just gaining ground and Blackberry was just for the 'ITS' in the office for office work. Nothing like IM, FaceTime, Snapchat, Skype etc and it still worked out. What am I saying? We were able to sustain our relationship with the distance, and the absence of now present technology, I believe LDRs can work out better in this age.

One: Wow, I wonder how you managed your LDR without technology *eyes opened wide!*

Ms PYT: Hello! I had a long distance relationship with my hubby; UK - Nigeria and it was not easy at all. We were already dating for 3 years before he travelled‎ and what really kept us going was great communication. It's possible to have LDR but both parties have to be on the same page.

One: Thank you Ms PYT! It's really great that the 2 examples given thus far ended in marriage.
Also, please tell us how you made it work? Practical things you did to ensure that you maintained communication, kept going, etc.

Ms PYT: We made sure we talked on the phone everyday and le boo can call ehn! My mum had to ask one day if the calls were free because we would talk for hours.
We also explored other means; Yahoo messenger (I would sit in the cyber cafe waiting for him to come online, lol)‎, Faceboook, Skype etc

One: Lol.. I remember the days of the internet cafe! Lol. I need to ask though, were there moments of doubt? How did you cope?

Remember the days of waiting for an email to come through at the internet cafe? "Oga, give me 15mins extra" lol
Ms PYT: There were times I was just tired of the relationship especially when I needed him to be there physically. One thing I didn't do was to bother myself if he was cheating or not.
As the relationship progressed, I was able to visit him at least twice a year and that kept us on track.
NB: Phone conversation involved lots of arguments and misconception.

Mr NumeroUno: Yeap to susceptible to misconceptions!

One: I agree, when I was in a long-distance relationship (Swansea - London), my mind was in overdrive.. I wasn't given reason to think far but my mind already had a life of its own so adding an LDR did not help!

I believe before going into one, know yourself, can you handle it?

Ms MIA: I started my relationship with my now fiancé over the phone.....hahaha! I still find it funny but we've known and been close friends for 10 years before so it made it a world easier I must say. With that, there were still moments I wanted to scream and throw it all out cause I felt it won't/wasn't working.

Things that kept us:
1. We set a time we would meet again very early on. From the moment we agreed on the relationship, we set a visit date. That was important for us and it meant that if we survived till we saw, all will be well (phone convo is very different from face-to-face).
2. We spoke a lot about agreeing to the commitment of the relationship. My fiancé wanted us to work so much that he 'swallowed' a lot from me. I guess he understood the difficulty of managing distant relationships so he pushed me until we both agreed that we'll both stick it out as God gives us strength
3. We talked everyday. This one was a matter of priority. We were involved in each others agendas and activities so that there was less room for doubts/fears and it meant that we learnt more about each other. We even used the opportunity to know each others' circle of friends/family.
4. We explored all the social media there was. A time came when we used video messaging more so we could see each other and at least feel close to the other.
5. We prayed a lot. Once I was convinced about this man and that I knew God's plan was for us to spend our lives together, my prayer was to sustain us.

Prayer that sustains...
One: Spoken like a truly experienced pro! Thank God for sustaining you and your fiancé!

Ms MIA: Lol.. My fiancé showed his commitment so much that I had less room for doubt so personally, that helped me a lot. Therefore I can say that it is possible but let God lead/guide you. I believe that even over the phone, God can reveal a person to you if you seek His will genuinely so you won't make mistakes.

Mr Motivation: I must say that LDR can either make the love in the relationship stronger or worse-off.

One: Really?

Mr Motivation: Yes.. Depending on several factors like personality, commitment, spiritual background, emotional background and even finances (It costs money oh). But the most important of all this is commitment. As the saying goes "Once there is a WILL, there is a WAY". One person cannot be making all the effort and the other is being lax about it; the pendulum must swing both ways in order to have a balance.

Where there's a will, you find a way
One: *Nodding* - Once there is a will, you will explore as many ways as possible #NeverSayDie

Mr Motivation: From my own experience - Swansea, Wales - Abuja, Nigeria (4,109 miles away...lol), what helped was constant phone calls (thank God for Lebara...lol), Skype et al, but above all, God. Had it not been for God and being resolute as to the purpose of having each other particularly in the aspect of destiny fulfillment, I would say we would have been history. Also, accountability matters a lot i.e. having the main objective being to make each other feel emotionally safe by being open as to anything and everything, is crucial. Being emotionally bankrupt in an LDR is a disaster waiting to happen. Times will come when one's mind will run faster than Usain Bolt but what helps is strictly dealing with facts about the personality of who you are with and not fiction.

These amongst others is what I believe helps in a LDR but please PRAY, PRAY and PRAY...... Love conquers ALL things.

One: Thanks for sharing from your wealth of experience! I love how practical you were, thanks..

Miss Me: I like the practical advices of trusting, regular communication and prayer of course. Personally, having been in an LDR, communication was key for us as usually we only saw each other for 3 months in a year. Sadly, this also proved to be a contributing factor to the demise of the relationship. For me communication is very key. Thank God that that we have so many forms of it nowadays (kudos to you Ms Truetalk for coping without!). Even if it's just a text or a one minute phone call, it makes a whole word of difference. I know some people are not talkers, particularly guys, but if you're in an LDR, it's a non-negotiable. TALK TALK TALK. It lets your partner know you're still interested and on the other hand, when the communication stops, it's a 'good' way to let them know you want out! :)

Communication - TALK TALK TALK!
One: Nice one Miss Me! I absolutely agree with you.. Communication is KEY!!
It's more important because you don't have the benefit of body language in addition to verbal language so a lot is left to the imagination..

Mr JohnNash: This is my succinct opinion... Any relationship without communication will die.
Any long distance relationship without long communication will in similar manner die.
I think in a long distance relationship, the guy must man up, be very open to the lady and above all, give her a lot of assurance. It's what women want. Assure her and give her assurance.

Ms PumpkinUnited: So are you saying the men don't need to be assured and given assurance as well? You make it sound like "shebi it's assurance, I'll give you so you stop whining'..
From my personal experience, it got to a point where it was really frustrating and all but just like Ms MIA said, it helps to designate a time when you both get to see each other physically cause sometimes Skype and all other means of communication ain't just enough. Above all, commitment and conviction matters, if you are both convinced about your being together then you'll find strength you never knew you had, not to mention the awesomeness of prayer.. I never planned to go into an LDR, however these few things have helped me.

Nubian Princess: I personally didn't plan to be in an LDR BUT due to work commitments, the SO is away a LOT!!! And when away, he has the most RIDICULOUS working hours.... (my hours are crazy too sooooo.... )

My pointers would be:
1. Make sure the other person knows they're a priority. We trry, as much as possible to speak first thing in the morning to give each other a run down of our day, so we know when and when we can't be reached, and we speak last thing at night too. Also, if someone calls the other, we try as much as possible to answer, even if it's to say "I'm in a meeting, let me call you back". It makes the other person feel relevant.

1. It cannot be overemphasised... The power of prayer. We have a set time in our calendars for prayer together every evening and we make it a priority... irrespective of where we are (social functions included)... It doesn't even have to be a long, winded, binding and casting type of prayer.. Lol! but praying together just strengthens the bond!

1. Also, speak often of the "promise". What are you walking towards as a couple? Remind yourselves of it often, as it helps to reassure both, especially during difficult or frustrating times... Technology is there for a reason... Skype, Rounds, Whatsapp, E-mail (which you can do at work).... Possibilities are endless...
1. Send each other gifts... If for no other reason, to put a smile on the SO's face....
1. Don't forget to tell each other "You *insert whatever feeling you have here* them!" :)

And they're all 1, because they're all important! :)

Send a gift - Just because...
Ms Hope: Well for me, I can say even in marriage, I'm in an LDR as my husband does a 5 weeks onshore/offshore rotation. It's even more difficult for me cause I'm required to be both dad and mum to the kids while he's gone, asides for having to do all the 'manly' chores in the house... However, somehow I have developed a coping mechanism.
I ensure I update him about all that is going on at home.
We talk several times a day
We don't discount on reaffirmation of our love
And we do plenty of video chats.

To say it's easy is clearly folly, but it is workable with plenty of efforts.

One: Thanks for bringing this important aspect to it - LDMs! Long Distance Marriages.. May God continue to give you both the grace to foster love and unity in your home.. Well done!!

Well, we've had a good conversation on this one! I actually didn't realise that almost all of us have been in an LDR!
So ladies and gentlemen, what's your take on it? Worth the stress or not? Please share your experiences too!! xx

Introducing... Music and Me!

Hiya lovely people!

As it was introduced on Monday here, the theme for 1 + The One this year is 'Grow in God, Grow in Love; Be the Best'.. We mentioned that in addition to regular series on the blog, we will be having new ones added - Yayyyyy! Lol

We love new things don't we? Let me digress a little - so, anytime I get given a new item (particular clothing), I am one of those people who have to use them 'sharp sharp' ... If there's nowhere to wear them to, I look for a place lol.. Also, I like wearing things first to church - See', my Daddy comes first always :-) In my mind, that's me paying 'firstfruit' or 'tithe' on it lol.. However, sometimes, when I can't wait till Sunday, my body does not rest until it is used! So tell me, how many people are with me on this? *Big grin*..

*Ok, digression over!*

Yes, today we start a new series that is very close to my heart called M&M which stands for Music & Me.. Just like many people I know, I loveee music and in particular, I love worship and praise! I delight in discovering new worship songs! There's just something so powerful and awesome about spirit-filled music.. When people say, "It's just a song, nothing more", I mentally shake my head like no way! It's not just music, it's a powerful tool that can be (and has been) used to do so many things -

The right music can inspire, it can encourage, it can lift up your spirit in the twinkling of an eye (you know what I mean right?), it can get you into a place of intimacy with God! The bible says "enter into His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise" (Psalm 100:4a) - thanksgiving and praise is often expressed through the medium of songs and singing. Now, this means that you and I can be transported, or can gain access to the inner sanctuary of God through music, God-ly music!

If in doubt, please try going a week surrounding yourself with nothing but unadulterated soul-lifting worship and praise songs.. You will definitely see a marked difference!

Back to the new series, every Wednesday by God's grace, we will be discussing and introducing Christian music that speaks to our souls - It could be a song that struck something in you when you listened to it, it could be a song or worship that you used during a down-time in your life and it made a huge difference, it could be a song that takes you into the 'God-zoneee', it could be a song that helps you express what mere words cannot quite convey, it could be a song that brings a zest and zing to your heart and steps whenever it comes up!

Each song will be accompanied by a story, introduction or reason why it is the choice of the week.. I hope that we will be introduced to new worship songs throughout this year to help us grow in God, grow in love and be the best!

I won't be the only one doing this, I welcome entries from YOU! Please send in yours and I will be more than glad to feature it by God's grace..

The first full post will be published next week by God's grace (we could have 1,2,3 or more posts each Wednesday depending on entries!)... so ladies and gentlemen, let's do this! We are starting a worship revolution in Jesus name - Whoop WHoop!!!! :-D :-)

Waiting and Loving It feat Toun and Bayo Osinubi

Hello everyone!!

We bring you the very first brand new Waiting and Loving It feature for the year 2015!! *Whoop Whoop!!*

For those joining us for the first time, welcome! Great to have you join us :-) You can read an introduction to the series from the first post HERE and my personal decision HERE. These other posts would also be useful too HERE and HERE!

For old-timers, let's dig in!! :-D

I met these lovely couple late 2013 and it has been really beautiful watching them relate with each other. The bride and I worked closely together and it was interesting to find out that her sister used to read the Waiting and Loving It posts on the blog.. It wasn't long before she also started reading and was a huge source of encouragement to me in doing new posts and blogging (thanks hun!)..

She had already said that when she tied the knot, she would kindly oblige being featured alongside her beau on the series and of course I was more than delighted and counted down eagerly with them!! Hehehe..

Well, here we are after a little over a year of meeting and knowing this beautiful couple, I have the immense pleasure of introducing to the HOT Love seat, Toun and Bayo Osinubi!!! I pray that you will be inspired and blessed by their story :-) :-) xxxx

****************************************************

The Mr and Mrs Osinubi!
Hiya Mr and Mrs Osinubi!! It's definitely great to have you grace our Love seat!! Could you please tell us about yourselves?

Bayo and Toun: Our names are Toun Osinubi (formerly Adelaja) and Bayo Osinubi. I am a Lawyer and Bayo is a Banker. We are both ardent football lovers that support Chelsea and Manchester United respectively. We also love watching movies and series, hanging out together and are bestest gist partners. We got married on Dec 20 2014 so we have been married for 24 days at the moment.

Awww, that's wonderful! A huge congratulations to you both!! You're probably our 'freshest' Waiting and Loving It couple :-) So tell us, how did you get to the 20th of Dec, what's the story?

Bayo: So it happened this way... While on vacation, I finally had time to wind down and have fun. So I went on Facebook and ended up on the page of a friend. On the side of that page was a cross-section of her friends. Until this day, I am glad I chose to click on one of the friends' profile cause that friend ended up being my Adetoun. I added her up, she fronted for a while but eventually, things kicked off

Toun: Some very random guy sent me a friend request on Facebook which I accepted simply because we had some credible mutual friends. We started chatting rather slowly and I definitely didn't take him seriously as he wasn't in Nigeria. After a few weeks, he returned to town and started desperately trying to see me. After several pleas, he came to the Law School (where I was at the time) to see me. It wasn't ‘love at first sight’ for me but I knew I had found a new friend. Fast forward to months of phone calls and BBM chats, visits and dates, he asked us to start a relationship. First response was ‘No’ but after proper thinking and a bit (yes just a bit) of prayer, I agreed to give him a chance.

Friend-zone --> Love-Zone! :-)
Lol.. See serious friend zoning - "It wasn't ‘love at first sight’ for me but I knew I had found a new friend".. See, guys and ladies, there's hope even in the zone of friendship lol.. So Bayo, we need to ask you, what was it that attracted you to this Facebook friend?

Bayo: It definitely had to be her smile! It lights up any room. From the first Facebook picture through to the real first meeting and till now, I totally adore her smile. She is also a very bubbly character that fears God and always looks for the best in everyone.

And for you Toun?

Toun: Bayo is good looking if I do say so myself! :-) However, the first attraction would have to be the fact that he is extremely intelligent. I could also easily sense that he was a very disciplined and focused individual. Those are basically strong points I look out for in people any day.

That's lovely.. So Bayo tell us, how did you know that the 'search' was over and you had found a wife in 'your Adetoun'?

Awwww..
Bayo: My spirit felt at home with her. She ticked pretty much all the boxes I ever wanted in a wife…and more.

Toun: He knows how to love! He loves God wholeheartedly and he loves me completely and without any shadow of doubt. That was it, that was all I needed. Oh yeah, he also has so many more fantastic qualities that made me know I had found ‘The One’.

"My spirit felt at home with her"
Beautiful! Thank God for you both indeed! Now to the main question of the day, what made you make the decision to wait until marriage before getting intimate?

Bayo and Toun: Hmmm, to be honest that wasn't the plan initially but after we started the relationship, we had ‘The Talk’. We knew it was the right thing to do and we had no plans to mess up the special bond we shared. That was all the motivation we needed and it worked.

Fantastic! You make it sound so easy lol.. Was it difficult? Were you tempted?

Bayo and Toun: YES it was!!! Extremely difficult! We were tempted oh, don’t even dull, the temptations will surely be there no matter how spiritual you are. However, there is no temptation too severe that we cannot bear… Just take the escape route already provided.
There were times we just wanted to stop and let it go after all we knew we were getting married anyway. .We noticed though that we were never weak at the same time. When she was weak and wanted to let it go I was the strong one and vice versa. That was probably what helped us through.

*Nodding* Thank God for that! Were there any other measures you took or things you did that helped?

Bayo and Toun: Well, we prayed together a lot. That was basically the best measure. Everything else didn't really work. We also like challenges a lot. This was a big challenge from the moment we agreed to be celibate. We took it as a task that we had to overcome - Our first major joint decision and so we knew we could not afford to fail.

That's wonderful.. Now that you have passed that mark, what advice would you give to your single self?

Bayo and Toun: It is worth it! Just see it as a joint challenge that comes with a prize at the end and together you will be proud you achieved the goal together.

Thank you.. Now tell us, it's been 24 days, what are the joys of marriage you're discovering first hand?

Bayo: I no longer have to spend hours on end on the phone (which by the way is not healthy!)… I've got my best friend, prayer partner and 'gossip' partner with me every day.

I can eat her cooking anytime I want. I love her food so it is exciting to look forward to her meals every time.

I now have my own wife. Someone I have to love, cater to and care for. I am happy to do this all day and every day for the rest of our lives.

Toun: I am excited to have someone to cuddle up to, watch movies with and gist with for hours on end into the night. I am happy to have a companion to go through the highs and lows of life with.

The best part so far is the freedom marriage brings. The freedom we both have to be our own people. We now make fully independent decisions without being questioned. That is sweeeet.

Lol... I like the way you drag the sweeeeet! May it continue and get even sweeter in Jesus name!
Thanks a lot for your time and for this very honest conversation. Now, before we let you off the hook, we would like to give you a moment with yourselves for some PDA! Love is beautiful when shared personally but it is also important to publicly affirm your love.. So here you go guys, the stage is yours......

Bayo says:
"Dearest Iyawo, having you beside me supporting me, comforting me, playfully slapping me, gives me all the confidence and strength I need to happily go through this life."

Toun says:
"I love you my darling husband. You are all I have ever wanted. You make feel like the most special woman in the world and for this I am grateful."

A little lot of PDA never hurts :-)
*************************************************

Awwww, *blush blush* {whispers} I'm such a sucker for love! lol. You cannot imagine how delightful it is to prepare and produce these interviews. No matter how similar the questions are, each couples story is very unique. At this juncture, I would like to use this opportunity to pray with everyone who desires marriage, may God who knows how to give His children good and perfect gifts (and delights in doing so) grant you the desires of your heart according to His will. May we celebrate you too this year in Jesus name.

I have learnt so many lessons from the many couples who have graced this page. As Toun and Bayo said in the interview, it is very important to determine early on in your relationship, your expectations, values and beliefs. It is a lot better when two of you are working towards the same goal and helping each other during moments of weakness.

Can waiting be difficult? YES! Definitely! (Borrowing their words lol).. But it is definitely possible by God's grace and worth it. In waiting, you honour God and you honour each other too.

Remember it doesn't have to take super-human personal strength, make that decision, ask God for grace and He will be very willing to oblige :-)

Once again, a HUGE thanks to Toun and Bayo Osinubi, may your marriage and home be immensely blessed and may it continuously inspire and be a blessing to others in Jesus name

Stop, Think, Count... Thank!

Happy 2015 everyone!!!!!!

Wow, here we are 5 days into the new year! Before we know it, we will no longer be able to refer to 2015 as 'new'.. :-)

How have you all been? On behalf of 1 + The One, I am especially grateful to God for 2014 and this post is a mega-thanksgiving post!

Sometimes you never know how much God has done until you start to take stock.. Until you start to reflect and count the things that have actually been done, without gazing at what didn't quite work out well.

End of 2014/beginning of 2015, I found myself actively documenting the many tangible evidences of God's faithfulness and goodness to me and those around me.. It was so important to do this because I almost fell into the trap of focusing on the things that I didn't get or achieve in 2014 as planned.. Thank God for His grace that urged me to stop, think, count and thank.. And thank I did! Infact when I was done counting, I couldn't stop praising!

Now, I am using the opportunity of this post to stop, think, count and thank God for what He did with 1 + The One in 2014! This is a public testimony to the fact that God is extremely GOOD and very faithful in ALL His ways... I am an extremely grateful girl this 5th day of January 2015 and I thank God that in 2014:

1. We CAME OUT and went un-anonymous on the blog and it was well received. One of the best decisions I have made thus far! :-) I was very reluctant at first (like "would I still be very open in my posts?!" {Well, not like I really really was lol}}. Thank God it has been well worth it!

2. We started the Waiting and Loving It series! Thank God for all the couples who agreed to share their stories to inspire and bless others - You rock!!

3. We got that email from Sebastian that was just an amazingly direct answer to prayers for encouragement at a 'down-time'.

4. We started the Chronicles of Sebastian series! God bless you Sebastian Luling - You are a great friend to me and 1 + The One!

5. We started the Married and Loving It series. It has been a huge blessing learning from the wisdom of these wonderful couples! God bless you!

6. We had the 30DaysofPraise in September and it was super-fabulous!!

7. I met GREAT people via this blog... I cannot even begin to count the amazing people God has brought my way through this medium - Words cannot express how grateful I am for you all!

8. Articles on the blog were re-published on other sites, with specific requests for some particular posts - I remember getting those emails requesting permission to re-publish the articles and I would just close the email without responding because in my mind I was like "Huh??! Who are they talking to??".. Lol.. God is wonderful!

9. I discovered new blog-treasures!! Mehn, all I can say is that God is generous in His gifts.. very generous!! Discovering these blogs has made blogsville even more interesting!!

10. Launched the 1st Video Post on the Blog! Another project that had been cooking for a while and finally came alive.. (I need to do more though lol!) But yeah, I am grateful that I took the plunge by God's grace, and like Nike, just did it! :-)

11. Attended the IJustMetMe conference by Tobi Atte - meeting people I had hitherto, only interacted with via the blog. Also, making life-long friends by God's grace :-). A memorable one indeed. Thank You Lord!

12. Had more social media presence than previously - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, BlogHer, BlogLovin... The list goes on and on!! lol. Thank God for the grace to be able to do this.. It has been REAL fun and an interesting experience!

13. Published more this year than the previous year including the weekly Dear Daddy - I had immense joy and pleasure writing each one. Thank You my dearest Daddy.

14. Started Conversations with One!! I love the panel of friends on this series and I am very very grateful for these wonderful people - Ms UTA, Miss Me, Mr Agbalagbaski, Ms MIA, Ms PYT, Mr John Nash, Ms PumpkinUnited, NubianPrincess, Mr Numero Uno, Mr Motivation, Ms True Talk, Ms Hope and Ms Angel (You thought I was gonna say their real names right?! Hehe).

15. Emails received from beautiful people including some testimonies - Only God could have done it!

Ok.. I could go on and on and not stop.. You see why I said that I am an extremely grateful human being? There is no denying, God is very good and faithful to answer prayers - even when we are unfaithful!

One of the things I prayed for at the beginning of 2014 was for the growth of 1 + The One and I testify that we have experienced growth only by God's grace.. God answers prayers.

Are we there yet? Not by a long shot! Lol.. By God's grace, much more to come! :-)

What are you grateful for? Like the popular song says, count your blessings, name them, list them, and it will surprise you just how much God has indeed done!..

I encourage you today while it's still early in the year to stop, think, count and then proceed to give God extravagant thanks and praise!

Lots of Love! xxxx

PS It's my birthday this week and I hope to do a Birthday/New Year Giveaway... *Still thinking on what it shall be*.... But stay 'tuned'.. I shall be announcing shortly :-)

God bless you! xxxx

PPS, this song kinda summarises this post for me at the moment.. I am absolutely nothing without the grace of God! Lord, thank You so very much. I am continuously and eternally grateful. #ButForYourGrace #ThankYouJesus
